Brink’s Canada Ltd. workers in Ontario ratify contract

Toronto – Brink’s Canada Ltd. workers in two Unifor bargaining groups, one in Ottawa region and the other covering the remainder of Ontario, have ratified new four-year contracts.

“These were very difficult negotiations,” said Unifor Assistant to the National Secretary-Treasurer Jenny Ahn. “In the end we were able to ratify new collective agreements in the face of a rapidly changing industry.”

The two bargaining groups voted in favour of new contracts that include improved benefits, the elimination of forced overtime, and significant wage increases, particularly in female dominated divisions. The new contracts share a common expiry date of August 26, 2021.

“Ultimately I don’t think either side left the table completely happy but I believe we achieved a fair deal that sets a common standard across the regions,” said Unifor Representative Mike Armstrong.

Approximately 1,000 armoured car drivers and messengers, members at Unifor Local’s 27, 103, 112, 195, 229, 504, 598, 599, 1359, 1106 and 4266, are covered under the new collective agreements in Ontario.

Members at Unifor Local 114 in British Columbia are still conducting scheduled votes on a tentative agreement with Brink’s Canada Ltd.

Unifor reaches tentative agreement with Brink’s Canada Ltd.

Toronto – A tentative agreement has been reached between Brink’s Canada Ltd. and Unifor, representing over 1,000 workers in British Columbia and Ontario.

“Bargaining teams representing British Columbia, the Ottawa region, and the remainder of Ontario worked very hard together,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “I congratulate them on obtaining a fair deal that includes a break-through in reaching a common expiry date in three bargaining regions for the first time.”

The new tentative agreements cover approximately 260 members at Unifor Local 114 in British Columbia and 800 members at Unifor Local’s 27, 103, 112, 195, 229, 504, 598, 599, 1359, 1106 and 4266 in Ontario.

The armoured car drivers and messengers deliver services to thousands of financial institutions, ATM’s and retail outlets across the two provinces.

“Negotiations were tough but I’m pleased that the union was able to reach a tentative contract that prioritized the needs of workers,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor BC Area Director.

The master bargaining committee is recommending the deal to the membership. Details of the collective agreement will be released upon ratification, which will take place in the coming days.

“Unifor has negotiated a deal that positions our members well for the future,” said Unifor Representative Mike Armstrong. ”The union will continue to fight to improve standards in a rapidly changing industry.”

Bombardier workers stand up for their industry

Sisters and Brothers,

Today members of Unifor Locals 112 and 673 walked out of their Bombardier aerospace plant in Downsview to call on Boeing to drop its trade complaint against the company. As past President of Local 112, I was proud to join the 1,500 workers at the rally to protect Canadian jobs and Canadian innovation.

Today’s action follows last week’s meeting with Boeing officials in Washington D.C. where I encouraged the company to drop allegations that Bombardier sold the C-Series plane at an artificially low price due to support from the Canadian and Quebec governments. There is still time for Boeing to withdraw its baseless complaint and seek a fair resolution with Bombardier before the ruling, which is expected next week.

UPDATE: Milton Northstar Aerospace plant

Greetings Sisters and Brothers,

A cease and desist order has ended Occupy Northstar. At this time no further action is scheduled.  Thank you to all who stood the line in solidarity for the past three days.  Through our efforts we were able to bring this issue to the forefront and generate an important public discussion on pensions.  Unifor will continue the fight for fair pensions for our Local 112 members and for all workers.  Please stay tuned for further details.
